Knaresborough opened the NCEL season with a 2-0 success over Pickering Town who were returning to the league after some six seasons away in the NPL and Northern League.

The visitors were first to press and Tommy Brown had to save low from Jamie Thornton in the first minute and then Wayne Brooksby missed a clear chance four minutes later.

Matthew Garbutt headed wide for Pickering in the 24th minute, but Knaresborough were beginning to settle and when Ewan Gregson swung in a corner from the right, the first line all missed it at the front post and Nathan Cartman stooped to head home in the 28th minute.

Pickering did have a lone chance right at the end of the half as Brown’s punched clearance was headed over the top.

Brown saved early in the second period following a free kick and then saved again after a misunderstanding with Harry Lee set the ball into a dangerous area in the ‘Boro’ penalty box.

As play broke forward, George Thewlis played forward to set Cameron Bedford clear and with the crowd expecting a further touch, an early left foot finish put Knaresborough 2-0 up in the 51st minute.

The usual spate of substitutions then began before Ewan Gregson’s effort was cleared off the line as ‘Boro’ sought to add to their total.

Garbutt headed wide for Pickering when well-placed before the save of the match from the visitors’ stopper who brilliantly tipped over a fine Danny Edwards header from a Harry Lee cross.
