Knaresborough Town progressed to the 2nd Qualifying round of the Isuzu FA Vase competition after a hard-fought 2-1 victory at Northern League Shildon on Saturday.

Shildon had a “goal” ruled out for a push in the very first minute and Tommy Brown had to save from Andrei Ardelean soon afterwards, but Knaresborough pressed forward themselves and Cameron Bedford and Brett Smith had shots saved by Mark Foden, the second direct from a free kick.

The dangerous winger, Joe Posthill, then broke clear for Shildon only to drag his shot wide of the post.

Jack Carr’s shot was then tipped wide by Foden and Knaresborough went ahead from the resulting corner as the ball was cleared to Bedford whose cross was only palmed away by Foden to Cole Wildin who fired home through the packed area.

A second Wildin shot was saved soon afterwards and Danny Edwards was twice wide of the target.

Shildon then pushed forward with Jack Vaulks heading wide and Brett Smith made a last-ditch clearance after Eddie Cass was robbed near the area.

Brown saved from Posthill before half time and from Billy Greulich-Smith header after the break before Shildon levelled in the 53rd minute.

Posthill appeared to be offside, but ran on to cross for Jon Weirs to place the ball home.

Knaresborough were undaunted and George Thewlis threaded a great pass for Dominic Creamer to run on and fire under Foden in the 57th minute.

Greulich-Smith then had the home side’s best chances in the remaining period, firstly firing against the bar and then heading wide with Brown saving from Posthill and Vaulks in between.

Bedford fired wide for the visitors before, in the final minute of the seven added, Greulich-Smith was narrowly wide as the home side remained frustrated.
