Ernest Clarkson (1939 - 2025)

Ernest George Clarkson was born in Knaresborough on October 2nd 1939 and lived all his life in the town.

As a youngster, Ernie was one of a band of children, along with many adults, who got jobs such as picking stones from the newly laid pitch area at Manse Lane after the club moved there in the early 1950’s. The land was a previous quarry which took on the role of a refuse tip for many years. After complete filling of the area, the council decided to sell the facility and the club, which had been on the lookout for a new pitch for many years took the option to buy some three to four acres of the land and turn it into a football ground which duly opened for play at the start of the 1953-54 season.

Soil was sourced to fill the area and then turf was brought in from Tommy Pedel a farmer at Goldsborough. By all accounts, the grass had many stones within it and before it could be used for sport, the stones needed to be removed, a laborious process which made use of many people including Ernie and his mates.

Obviously, the involvement of children in that process would build either resentment or pride and with Ernie it proved the latter, as he took to football at school and began playing for the club at the start of the 1957-58 season, when he first appeared on the team lists for the first game of that season against Collingham for the reserves. He appears regularly on the reserves team lists throughout the next two seasons, but as goals were few and far between, as Ernie was a defender or midfielder, the confirmation of appearances is not certain.

His first team debut is likely to have been at full back away at Harrogate Boys Club Old Boys at New Park, Harrogate in the first round of the Whitworth Cup on February 21st 1959, a game which was won 4-2.

The 1959-60 season saw a regular place at left back, but Ernie’s career in football then became secondary to his career as a fireman.

The fire brigade was Ernie’s career until retirement in his 50’s, but it also meant working shifts and that sometimes came into conflict with football as working in the brigade also entailed being on call at weekends. Hence, the number of games in which he took part was limited though throughout the 1960’s he was very much a part of the club.

In the early 1970’s, he turned out for a team called Coneythorpe Tigers which played at Arkendale in the Claro Sunday League and then became a part in the early days of Goldsborough Football Club from 1977 to 1984, when he retired from football after captaining the team to a 4-2 victory over Sherwood in the Arkendale Trophy final under floodlights at Harrogate Town, a trophy presented to the league by Jack Hall, who helped form the Coneythorpe team.

The Goldsborough team was a spin off from the cricket club which took up much of Ernie’s spare time, particularly over the summer months. He was Secretary of the cricket club for many years, running the bar and spending much if his “spare” time at the club. He was also heavily involved with the Harrogate & District Evening Cricket League in a number of roles, but each integral to the smooth operation of the league.

Aside from playing, Ernie became an integral part of the football club at Manse Lane through his never-ceasing fund-raising efforts. For many years, Ernie was the “codes man”, the codes being a three letter sequence which represented a different set of three football teams each week and gave all participants the chance to win decent prize money whilst contributing much to the funds of the football club. Ernie had many of his own customers most of whom had little or no connection with the club aside from paying each week for a code. The number of miles which Ernie travelled on foot, or more likely on his trusty pushbike, is incalculable!

When it was decided to cease these codes, which over the years involved not only the football club, but also Knaresborough Cricket Club. Knaresborough Forest Cricket Club and others, the Football Club set up a 100 Club, again for a regular contribution and a chance to win a prize in the monthly draws. The miles continued to be racked up as Ernie kept many people going, but collected the money every month.

Originally, Ernie was made President of the club in 2010, but decided to stand back to vice-president allow Geoff Waite to take up the role after the latter stood down as treasurer in 2013.

Ernest was still a regular visitor to Manse Lane up until last season and was regularly seen at the back of the stand with daughter Sonia and son-in-law Nick, who continued the match to match routines of supplying the food and drink to keep Ernie well-nourished and well-informed of all the team changes for the programme which he avidly sought each week.

His health had deteriorated since having major surgery in 2019 when he was forced to quit lawn tennis, which he took up after football and cricket, In the past couple of years he was diagnosed with Parkinsons with dementia and has spent the last 18 months in Vida Hall at Station View in Starbeck (but never been tempted to abandon KTFC for Railway!). He loved his Saturday trips to Manse Lane right up to the end of last season and was there whatever the weather for firsts or reserves. Despite a chest infection meaning he coulnd't make our first home games this year he continued to enjoy his sport, particularly the England V India test on Sky Sports which he enjoyed up to Saturday evening, having a good chat and banter with one of the Indian members of the care team there. Ernie passed peacefully in his sleep early on Sunday August 3rd aged 85 and will leave a deep void in and around Knaresborough.

KTAFC Club Lottery - Jackpot Winner

Saturday 12th July 2025 saw our first club lottery jackpot winner. The winner of the jackpot was Sonia Smith who won £2650.

Sonia and her husband Nick were presented with a cheque at half time during our pre-season friendly vs Pontefract Collieries. We caught up with Sonia who had this to say

"I couldn't believe it when I got the phonecall to say one of my lines had won the jackpot, I had thought it was un-winnable but I was very wrong! Really over the moon. Of course we don't enter with the expectation of winning, its all about supporting the club that my dad (club vice president Ernie Clarkson) has been involved with fundraising for as long as I've been around and that we come to watch every week. I remember in the 70s learning my letters and numbers as a child helping him with the football pools he used to run for the club and then coming to the committee meeting in the old green club hut where the car park is now on a Monday night with the cash! So I will be putting an amount back in to the club to help towards the new 3G pitch which is what dad would do too. Then with some of the remainder i will be enjoying a couple of nights in a spa hotel with my hubby!"

Huge congratulations to Sonia on winning the Jackpot. The prize fund will start again this coming Saturday with the prize at £1000. If you would like to get involved you can do using the link on the homepage of our website.

Knaresborough Town Community 3G Pitch

Let’s Build It Together: Knaresborough Town FC Launches Community Campaign to Create a 3G Pitch for All

Knaresborough Town Football Club has launched a bold and exciting community campaign to raise funds for the installation of a state-of-the-art 3G artificial pitch at The Hummel Stadium, Manse Lane and we’re inviting everyone in the community to be part of it.

This isn’t just about football. It’s about creating a safe, modern, and accessible hub for the whole community from young children taking their first kick of the ball, to older adults staying active through walking football, and from women’s teams breaking new ground to local groups using sport to support mental wellbeing and social connection.

A pitch with purpose. A place for everyone.

With a weatherproof surface built to FA and FIFA standards, the new 3G pitch will enable:

  • Year-round sport for boys, girls, and inclusive teams

  • A new era of women’s and girls’ football in Knaresborough

  • Safe, structured activity for groups like Rainbow Care Dementia

  • Community fitness, walking football & health programmes

  • A welcoming space for schools, families, and local charities

  • A true community hub that brings people together, regardless of age or background

Paul Howard, Club Chairman, said: "This project is about so much more than sport. We’re building a space where our whole town can connect, thrive, and feel proud. It’s about creating opportunity and social value, and giving the next generation a place to belong.”

Why Now?

The club's current grass pitch is regularly unplayable due to flooding causing cancelled games, disrupted training, and lost opportunities. But now, thanks to the support of local MP Tom Gordon and the Football Foundation, the wheels are in motion.

Tom Gordon, MP for Harrogate & Knaresborough, said: "Knaresborough Town FC plays a vital role in our community – not just in sport, but through their support for causes like Henshaw’s and Rainbow Care Dementia. With ministerial and Foundation backing now in place, the final step is funding. Let’s finish the job together.”

Your Community. Your Pitch. Your Legacy.

We need YOU local residents, businesses, families, and supporters to help bring this project to life.

How You Can Make a Difference:

  • Donate – every contribution, big or small, brings us closer

  • Sponsor – businesses can leave a legacy and gain exposure

  • Share – spread the word, tag a friend, involve your network

  • Join our fundraising events – soon to be launched

  • Volunteer – your time and skills are just as valuable

Whether you share our posts, give £5 or £500, you’re not just helping build a pitch you’re creating a space where lives will be changed for years to come.

The Plan:

Construction is targeted to begin in 2027, with completion expected by 2028 but the community effort begins today.

Let’s come together to build a place where everyone feels welcome, included, and inspired.

Season Overview & a look ahead from our Chairmen

As the season draws to a close, we extend our deepest thanks to all our committee, players, sponsors, and supporters.

The first team concluded the season with a League cup final appearance. Although we did not manage to win the cup, the performance the team gave was truly outstanding. In the league, we finished 12th out of twenty, with the second half of the season showing a massive improvement over the first.

Our reserve team has experienced a season filled with both highs and lows. Despite the challenges of not being able to select the same team week in and week out, our players have shown remarkable resilience and determination. Although we finished 13th out of fifteen in the division, we are proud of the effort and commitment displayed by everyone involved.

Our open age women's team has achieved promotion for the third consecutive season, highlighting their talent and determination. They reached the semi-finals of both the county cup and league cup, defeating Premier Division teams but narrowly losing to Leeds United and Wyke Wanderers. We are proud of their hard work and achievements this season.

Meanwhile, our U18 women’s team finished second in their division and reached the quarter final of their league cup and produced players who featured in the senior women’s team, a testament to their hard work and commitment.

Each team has demonstrated significant dedication throughout the season, and preparations for the 2025/26 season are already in progress. We are immensely proud of all our players and look forward to even greater achievements in the future. Let us continue to support and celebrate our teams' successes together!

To all our supporters, we appreciate your continued support for Knaresborough Town AFC, a community club managed by volunteers and dedicated to future generations of Knaresborough.

At Knaresborough Town AFC, football is more than just a game—it is a community, a passion, and a shared journey. We want to extend our whole-hearted thanks to everyone who makes this club what it is.

To our dedicated committee, whose tireless work behind the scenes keeps everything running smoothly—your commitment is the backbone of our success.

To our men’s and women’s teams, the heart and soul of our club, who bring talent, determination, and team spirit to the pitch week after week—we are immensely proud of you.

To our managers and coaches, who inspire, train, and lead our players with skill and dedication—your guidance shapes the future of this club.

To our volunteers, who give their time and energy to ensure every match day and event runs without a hitch—we truly could not do it without you.

And, of course, to our generous sponsors and staunch supporters-your belief in Knaresborough Town AFC allows us to continue providing football at a high standard for the local community. Your support is the foundation on which this club stands, and we are forever grateful.

Together, we are Knaresborough Town AFC. Together, we grow, we play, and we succeed.

Together we are stronger.

We appreciate your support and look forward to continuing our journey together.

Sincerely, Paul Howard and Nigel Corner
